When you announce plans to visit Tainan, you're likely to get enthusiastic recommendations from Taiwanese locals eager to share their favorite spots in this historic city. Known as the culinary capital of Taiwan, Tainan is not just about its historical significance but also for its delectable xiaochi (small eats) and the tranquil beauty of its many temples.
Yet Tainan is much more than food and history. Recent years have seen a cultural renaissance as many people from Taipei move here to escape the bustling life of the capital, leading to the opening of numerous new eateries, bars, and shops, enhancing the city's laid-back charm.
Among the standout eateries is Zyuu Tsubo, a restaurant located in a converted rubber workshop. This intimate dining spot, with just 10 seats, is famed for its exquisite seafood dishes that blend Japanese culinary techniques with Taiwanese flavors. Visitors are particularly fond of their harako meshi and kaisen don dishes, which feature a mix of fresh seafood beautifully presented.
Another hidden gem is Sputnik Lab, a former dormitory for Japanese government employees that has been transformed into a serene teahouse. This spot offers a tranquil escape with its matcha-based desserts and authentic Japanese garden, providing a slice of Kyoto in the heart of Tainan.
No visit to Tainan is complete without a stop at TCRC, once a depository, now a trendy bar that made the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list multiple times. Renowned for its inventive cocktails and vibrant atmosphere, TCRC is a must-visit for those looking to experience the local nightlife.
Another popular spot is Lola, known for its comfy vibe and excellent selection of drinks. This quaint bar, nestled in a cozy alley, also doubles as a venue for live music, adding to its eclectic charm.
For those looking to take a piece of Tainan home, the Hayashi Department Store is a treasure trove of local crafts, teas, spices, and vintage-inspired items. Don't forget to visit the rooftop for a panoramic view of the city and its historic Shinto shrine.
